Clean workout clothing (including a t-shirt or rash guard, shorts or compression leggings). We also advise bringing a mouthguard to your first class as MMA/BJJ is a contact sport.
If you have any 7OZ hybrid MMA gloves or boxing gloves and shin pads, bring these to your first striking/MMA class. Otherwise, we do have spare gloves and shin pads for those attending a free trial.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), progression and earning belts are based on a combination of factors such as skill development, time spent training and demonstrating proficiency in techniques. Here's an outline of how the belt progression typically works:
White Belt (Beginner)
Starting Point: Every practitioner begins at the white belt level. The focus is on learning the basic techniques and understanding the fundamentals of BJJ.
How Long to Stay: White belt typically lasts for 1-2 years, depending on the individual’s dedication, skill development, and time spent on the mat.
Blue Belt (Intermediate)
Requirements: To promote to blue belt, you’ll need to show an understanding of basic and intermediate techniques, demonstrate proper rolling (sparring) ability, and be able to defend yourself against opponents of similar or higher skill levels.
How Long to Stay: The blue belt phase can last around 2-3 years, but progression depends on how quickly a practitioner masters more complex techniques and principles of BJJ.
Purple Belt (Advanced)
Requirements: Purple belts have a deep understanding of BJJ techniques and are capable of applying them in live sparring. At this stage, you’ll be expected to demonstrate strong control, submission skills, and awareness of strategy.
How Long to Stay: It typically takes about 1-2 years to progress from blue to purple belt, though this can vary depending on the practitioner’s individual growth.
Brown Belt (Pre-Expert)
Requirements: Brown belts are highly skilled, with a strong command of BJJ fundamentals and a creative approach to rolling. They should be able to teach lower belts and demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge.
How Long to Stay: The brown belt phase is generally around 1-2 years, where a practitioner works on perfecting their game and preparing for the black belt.
Black Belt (Expert)
Requirements: Earning the black belt signifies expert-level skill in BJJ. The black belt practitioner is expected to have an in-depth knowledge of the sport and possess the ability to teach and mentor others. At this level, focus often shifts toward refining technique and strategy, as well as contributing to the BJJ community.
How Long to Stay: It can take anywhere from 8-12 years to earn a black belt, though this timeline can vary. The time spent at each belt level is based on individual progression.
Promotions in BJJ are earned through hard work, consistency, and mastery of the art. There’s no set timeline for when you’ll get promoted—it’s based on individual progress!

For Kids: The belt system for children typically follows a different structure with additional belt colors (such as white, grey, yellow, orange, and green) and might progress faster than for adults. Kids' progression focuses more on fundamentals and building confidence. Generally, kids will receive stripes every 3-6 months which add up to progress to a new belt colour.
Key Factors in Promotion:
Time on the Mat: Practitioners need to put in consistent hours training, sparring, and attending classes.
Technical Skill: Demonstrating proficiency in techniques and applying them effectively during sparring sessions.
Instructor Evaluation: Your coach will assess your overall improvement, technical ability, and maturity in the sport.
Attitude and Commitment: Being dedicated, disciplined, and respectful to training and your training partners plays an essential role in progression.
